The best-kept secret in American hunting isn't a spot — it's a category. Fourteen-plus states pay private landowners to open their ground to public walk-in hunting, adding millions of acres of huntable land you can use for free (or nearly free) with just your license.

The big programs

• Kansas WIHA: 1M+ acres of walk-in hunting, the largest program in the country
• Montana Block Management: ~7M acres of ranch land; Type 1 areas use self-serve sign-in boxes
